Nature Hudson

Since 2020, the Legacy Fund has supported Nature Hudson in their legal efforts to protect Sandy Beach, a unique riparian environment and significant community space in Hudson, Quebec.

In 2021, the Legacy Fund commissioned TerraHumana Solutions, an ecological consulting and research firm, for an expert biodiversity study of this unique ecosystem. TerraHumana’s study found twenty-nine endangered species on the Sandy Beach proposed development site in Hudson, where the developer had reported only one. The results are now part of the Environment Ministry’s files documenting the ecological value of Sandy Beach.

In addition, a financial analysis of this proposed development showed the same result as in Rosemere: that the development would not be an economic boon to the region, but would instead result in higher taxes for residents.

Over the course of this battle, the Legacy Fund also financed legal procedures in defense of the Willowbrook area in Hudson, which contains wetlands, forests and an important archeological site, the Ottawa Glass Works. The new municipal council has, in part because of these initiatives, placed a reserve on these two areas, thereby halting development.
