The Legacy Fund for the Environment (LFE) is supporting the Collectif Antigone, a citizen-led environmental group, in a legal case following a direct action on October 19, 2022. Twelve activists occupied the Valero terminal in east Montreal for 24 hours to protest Enbridge’s Line 9B pipeline.
LFE is assisting with the legal expenses of the activists, who are represented by an experienced legal team. The collective is using the trial as an opportunity to challenge the legal impunity of fossil fuel infrastructure. Their legal strategy is based on the defence of necessity, aiming to establish the environmental urgency and risk to drinking water posed by Line 9B. The case highlights the need for legal tools that prioritize ecological protection.
