How can we help?

The Legacy Fund for the Environment partners with citizens’ groups in pursuing legal actions to defend the environment.

We fund legal actions (from demand letters to lawsuits) and the studies needed to succeed:

  • biodiversity studies;

  • tax analyses;

  • archeological evaluations;

  • other studies needed by citizens’ groups in their quest to preserve their natural environment.

We are there to help you with our experience:

  • incorporate your non-profit organization;

  • find experienced lawyers;

  • find the experts you need, from our growing network.

We stay involved throughout.

How does the funding work?

The Legacy Fund usually matches dollar-for-dollar sums raised by the citizens’ group up to an agreed-upon amount, but we can make exceptions based on individual circumstances. Importantly, any funds raised by our partner citizens’ group – when donated through the Legacy Fund – are eligible for a tax deduction.

Consider what a $100 dollar donation to the Legacy Fund means to the citizens’ group under our matching-grant program: after the tax refunds, a 100$ donation costs the donor only $50 to $65, while the citizens’ group receives $230 to finance their legal recourses and related studies.

Our selection criteria:

  • importance of the case to society, both at large and to the local community

  • importance of the case as a legal precedent,

  • chances of success,

  • cost and available funding and

  • quality of the legal team selected.

If the Legacy Fund adopts a proposal, we sign a simple agreement with the non-profit organization and, because we do not have lawyers on staff, with the legal team selected to prosecute the case. This agreement will cover such details as funding, reporting and oversight of the case.

If you have a proposal to discuss, please contact us.

We reply quickly.
