In a compelling webinar that took place on September 27th, 2023, participants were treated to an enlightening exploration of biodiversity studies’ crucial role in safeguarding our natural spaces. Dr. Isabelle-Anne Bisson, a distinguished expert in environmental impact and community needs assessment, took the virtual stage to share her profound insights under the theme, “Assessing Biodiversity as a Tool for Protecting Your Natural Spaces.”
With over two decades of experience as a scientific consultant, coordinator, and manager of science and conservation projects globally, Dr. Bisson’s expertise has left an indelible mark on the field. Having led projects for the United States’ Department of Defense and spearheaded initiatives in Uganda under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), she brings a wealth of experience to the forefront of environmental conservation.
In 2014, Dr. Bisson co-founded TerraHumana Solutions (www.terrahumanasolutions.com), an organization dedicated to providing expert services in science and sustainability. Her recent work with northern Indigenous communities in Nunavik underscores her dedication to addressing environmental challenges associated with ongoing development. Presently involved with the Mohawk community of Kanesatake, Dr. Bisson’s commitment extends beyond research into tangible community projects.
Dr. Bisson discussed how biodiversity studies help citizens and other grassroots organizations acquire data and knowledge on the natural spaces they are fighting to protect. How these studies also help understand the overall biodiversity in the area and the impact (loss) if the development may go ahead after all.
Isabelle discussed her work with TerraHumana Solutions and the time, equipment, and immense human effort it takes to assess the biodiversity in a given area. The audience also gained insights into the complexities of authorizations for development projects, as well as the gaps in the information developers often present to regulatory bodies.
The presentation also featured compelling case studies, including Sandy Beach in Hudson and Rousseau Forest in Pincourt.
One of the webinar’s crucial aspects was Dr. Bisson’s emphasis on community participation. She elucidated how anyone, regardless of their background, can play a pivotal role in protecting the species in their neighborhoods and beyond. By bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and community action, Dr. Bisson provided a roadmap for individuals and grassroots organizations to become active participants in environmental conservation.
